The only house left in Hultet (April 2004)

During the Easter 2004 holiday Fred Broman took a snowmobile trip to homestead place that Lars Olof and his family left when emigrating to Maine. The place, called "Hultet", is located 3 miles southwest of Sörbyn on the south hill slope of a hill called "Renskinnskölen" ( the Reindeer Hide Hill). In our arctic climate it was important to locate homesteads on southern slopes to catch as much sun as possible to the potato- and barley plantations. Barley and potatoes are the only grains that can stand our climate and were in the 19th and the first half of 20th century the staple food (together with wild meat, berries and fish) for people in the rural areas up in the north.

This image is the only house left in Hultet (a typical homestead house from the 19 century).
